Hiking, to walk

Within the Randstad, the Green Heart is a peat meadow area where you can enjoy beautiful walks. Various routes have been set out along paths, but also straight through the meadows, so that you can admire the typical Dutch polder landscape with its richness of plants and animals. We have several routes available for you.

The Reeuwijk lakes are ideally suited for a nice walk. These lakes, located between Gouda and Reeuwijk, have a lot to offer. They are a paradise for birds that flock here in summer and winter. It is not without reason that a large part of this area has been designated a Natura 2000 area. Between the lakes you walk on narrow roads and around the water you experience the old polder land with its wood quays, reed borders, dikes and farm roads. It couldn’t be more Dutch!

One tip: don’t forget your binoculars!

Bicycling

Various varied cycling routes take you straight through the wide cultural landscape of the Green Heart. Here you will discover that Holland still can be really Holland. In the authentic South Holland polder landscape you will be amazed by the many meadow birds that live here. Along the way you will pass old farms, mills, nurseries and small nature reserves. It is wonderful to cycle along the Reeuwijkse Plassen, with beautiful cycle paths along the lakes. An ideal cycling area. There are even roads which you drive straight through, with water on both sides.

The fight against water in the Netherlands is timeless. Controlling the water level is a prerequisite for all life in this region. You simply wouldn’t be able to live here without the pumping stations. During your bike ride you will certainly notice the differences in the water level!

Many cycling routes can be found on the Internet. We also have cycling maps available where the junctions with route numbers are usually indicated.
